Mercury set to soar across Bengal again, scorching heatwave likely in Kolkata and other districts

Temperatures across West Bengal are expected to rise sharply from Thursday, with several districts, especially in South Bengal, likely to experience heatwave conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a 3°C to 5°C increase in temperature between Friday and Sunday, with no immediate rainfall expected in most areas. The discomfort index is also projected to rise due to increased humidity.

In Kolkata, the sky is expected to remain clear from Friday onward, though some areas may witness light cloud cover. Despite this, there is no forecast of rain, and residents should prepare for hotter days ahead. The maximum temperature is likely to rise gradually through the week, accompanied by uncomfortable weather conditions during the day. The IMD has ruled out the possibility of thunderstorms in Kolkata and its adjoining districts until at least the weekend.

Heatwave warnings have been issued for several South Bengal districts including Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, Jhargram, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum. These areas are likely to experience intense daytime heat on Friday and Saturday. The IMD has also indicated that the overall weather in South Bengal will remain hot and humid through Saturday, with minimal chances of rain or storm activity during this period.

In contrast, North Bengal districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur may experience isolated light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder between Thursday and Sunday. The IMD has also indicated the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong on Sunday. Despite rainfall forecasts, temperatures in these districts are also expected to rise from Thursday.

The weather department has advised residents across Bengal to remain alert to changing weather conditions over the coming days. While some northern districts may receive intermittent rain, the general trend across the state points toward rising temperatures and hot, uncomfortable conditions through the weekend.
